The return of Singapore’s national Open has been highlighted by the staging of a series of junior golf clinics organised by the Singapore Golf Association Golf (SGA) in partnership with the SMBC Singapore Open.
Nearly 100 juniors have taken part in a total of three golf clinics, including one today at Jurong Country Club.
A total of 20 juniors took part and saw them take to the course and play five holes while under the guidance of professionals Johnson Poh from Singapore and England’s Skye Neal.
The first junior clinic was held in October at Sentosa Golf Club and saw 30 juniors participate under the watchful eye of Myanmar’s Kyi Hla Han, a former Asian Tour number one and now the Commissioner of the Tour, as well as Singaporean professionals Koh Deng Shan and Jerome Ng.
The second golf clinic in November was also held at Sentosa with nearly 40 juniors taking part.
Singapore professionals Choo Tze Huang and Jerome Ng conducted proceedings along with Gregory Foo, Joshua Ho and Abdul Hadi, all members of the national amateur team.
The experience was made even more special by the fact that Foo, Ho and Hadi had just returned from playing in the Nomura Cup where they finished fourth. It was Singapore’s best finish in what is one of the region’s most prestigious amateur team championships.
Foo and Ho have qualified for the SMBC Singapore Open, having won the Singapore Open and Closed Amateur Championships respectively.
All the participants were recruited by the SGA via the Ministry of Education with the aim to give young aspiring golfers access to professional tuition.
It is hoped to expand these junior golf clinics this year into a more regular development programme.
The golf clinics have been organised by the SGA and Lagardère Sports, the promoter of the SMBC Singapore Open.
